December – January 2004

For those UK readers who like to feast their eyes on something cheerful over the winter, we’ve got just the job in the December-January S&G: pictures galore . Jochen Ewald’s photos from the Idaflieg meeting showcase the latest German developments, from the new AK-8’s elegant curved leading edge to the anti-spin system attached to the tail of the SB-14. The white planes picture co.went to Germany and got some great shots of the DG-1000, and to the Junior Nationals to record some of the new hopefuls on the scene. And Gliding Gallery contains your own pictures – from Spanish sun to English snow, from the Alps to the Isle of Wight .

Amazing images feature strongly, too, in the second instalment of Guy Westgate and Paul Barker’s travels through Europe in their motorgliders. Their goal this issue: to slip past the storms to take a TP photo of the steam rising from Mt Etna’s crater…

Meanwhile, Richard Smith explores how you can review your field landings and improve your technique by using the latest technology; Tony Segal updates us on discussions at the recent OSTIV Congress; and Ed Gardener takes a look at emergency parachuting. If you’re into competitions, we round up the season with regionals and nationals results, and report on the remaining rated nationals.

Finally, if your club is contemplating a new two-seater, you’ll be interested to hear that Yorkshire GC has bought itself a DG-1000. Graham Evison explains why and how they got it, while Pete Masson puts one through its paces and gives his verdict.

Happy reading, happy Christmas and happy soaring!
